Purple Aurora Hair Affair
When my hair grows out I like to play around with it so to keep it looking fresh. This usually alternates between crazy colors and conservative ones. In my last post I mentioned that I had dyed it a brown black for a nice clean slate. I also mentioned that I was saving some bleach for future streaks. Well, that time came and my inspiration was The Bride of Frankenstein.
No joke! I think she's so pretty and I hope that I can dress up as her one day for Halloween. My plan was to bleach a platinum blonde streak in my hair and later use a product to turn it white like a toner or use Manic Panic's Virgin snow which I hear is quite good. I was all set to go except I made two major mistakes! I'm sharing them because I don't want to have others make the mistakes I did.
My two big boo boos:
1. I used a bleaching kit I was not familiar with: I thought I was safe as I did use a 20 vol developer kit. I figured if it would strip the color gently I could catch if it would damage ahead of time. All was going good EXCEPT! Low and Behold I was allergic to the product and it burned my skin! This dye job is literally after a week from the bleaching incident. I had scabs in my scalp and going down my temples. Worse off, the thing stripped my color in less that 15 min! That was just weird for such a weak developer, it even fried my hair. So please, when you decide to go platinum use a brand your familiar with.
2. I made the streak in front: Okay, before anyone goes defending or bashing this, this is my personal experience and opinion/taste about this. When I got the streak to a platinum blonde shade it looked terrible on me. This I felt was because it was so close to the front of my head and I did a section of it. I looked like I was balding on one side of my head because it was so light. I also think that platinum is not so flattering next to my skin. Next time I decide to try the white thing over again I will be putting the streak in a layer behind my bangs so it blends nicer. I've done this with blonde and baby pink and I'm sure that it'll look much better that way.
To right my wrongs I grabbed my nearest bottle of left over color and I scrapped the bottom of it and added conditioner. For a few days I had cotton candy pink. I still thought it looked pale for me so I went to the store and picked up Beyond Zone in Raspberry Kamikaze. I love Beyond Zones pink and red tones because they come out so vibrant and the color doesn't stain my counters. I also touch up color when I have it at least every two weeks and it's easy to comb through. When I added the color it was still a bit light for me so I combed through Raw Color in Twisted Teal. What you see above is the result! I have about three shades of purple going on, and I enjoy the dimension.
To maintain it, I have small bottles of my shampoo and conditioner that have some of the Beyond Zone Dye in them. It keeps up the color and it works nicely. I love the purple tones because they're so versatile. If I'm feeling a bit more playful I can add more pink hues, or if I want to be a bit conservative I add more blue. This is a nice transitional color between my black and my hot pink hair. It's starting to grow on me. I also enjoy the halftone hair in the front which adds just a little bit of the asymmetrical feeling to my do without having to cut it. From experience, asymmetrical hair is the hardest to grow out and can sometimes put you into a rut with your hair routine. I've been considering the assymetrical look again, but have been hesitant. This is my compromise.
I'm enjoying this fun look! Yay for change!
